Decode and search

Read an old number.

Type the number from a birth record. Girmit explains which part points to which ancestor. Ship look-ups and name spellings are in the tool, alongside your tree.

Numbers separated by a slash, for example 903 or 21247/903/314.

What a search looks at

  • The colonial number you read from a birth record or certificate.
  • The ship and the year of arrival that number leads to.
  • Names, as they were spelled by ear in old ship’s records.

What it does not do

  • It does not read your documents for you. You type in the numbers you read yourself.
  • It does not submit anything to the High Commission.
  • It cannot guarantee that an application is approved.
