Girmit · Free forever
About Girmit
Free, and staying free.
The Girmit tree, the eligibility check and the dossier stay free. They will not be capped, metered, or moved behind a paywall. Voice and video recordings come with the Family plan, R199 a year for the whole family. Printed copies will follow, at the printer’s price.

What is free
Everything you need to build your case.
- The family tree and the account that keeps it, which you make, change and delete yourself.
- The eligibility check and the seven-generation line.
- The number reader and the name spellings.
- Share a branch, with relatives who need no account to open it.
- The dossier and the family booklet, as files you can print yourself.
- Family Stories: written stories and up to 100 photos, free. The Family plan (R199 a year for the whole family) adds voice and video, 1 GB of space, questions to the family, the keepsake book and our certificate reader (20 pages a year). Need more space? Write to us.

How it stays free
Anyone who wants to may help.
If Girmit helps your family and you would like to keep it free for others, you can make an optional contribution by EFT, of any amount. Giving doesn’t get you anything extra, and not giving doesn’t take anything away. The details are shown only to signed-in members.
What this is not
An organised assistant, nothing more.
Not a lawyer, not an immigration agent, and not part of the Indian government. Girmit does not submit anything for you and cannot guarantee approval. Think of it as a very organised assistant that helps you get your paperwork in order before you go to the Consulate.
Privacy
What you enter is private to your account.
Your tree and your documents are stored encrypted. Other family members cannot see them. When you share a branch, living people appear with a birth year only, and you can stop sharing at any time. Deleting your account deletes everything in it.
Accessibility
Built to be read by every generation.
The text is large and clear in both the light and the dark look. You can use everything with a keyboard alone. If your phone or computer is set to reduce motion, the animations switch off and you see the finished map and tree, with the same words.
If something does not work for you, write to us and we will fix it.
